Während meiner Zeit als klassische Pianistin habe ich
viele wunderbare und bewegende Melodien entdeckt. Als ich
in die Welt des Jazz hinein schnupperte, entdeckte ich noch
mehr wundervolle und aufregende Musik, und während eine
einjährigen Aufenthalts auf der indonesischen Insel Bali,
bei dem ich die traditionelle Gamelan-Musik studierte, habe
ich mich ganz der faszinierenden Rhythmen und obertonreichen
Klangwelten dieser Musik hingegeben. Aber erst als ich die
Kompositionen Astor Piazzollas für mich entdeckte, fand
ich genau das was ich suchte: enorme musikalische und technische
Herausforderungen, Leidenschaft und tiefste Aufrichtigkeit
innerhalb eines weiten Feldes voller Emotionen, Improvisation
ebenso wie die Komplexität und Ästhetik zeitgenössischer
klassischer Musik, die Einfachheit nostalgischer Melodien
und groovende lateinamerikanische Rhythmen.
Weil
mich aber das bloße Nachahmen Piazzollascher Kompositionen
ärgerte, habe ich mich gegen Bandoneon und Violine entschieden
und stattdessen ein Saxophonduo (mit Otmar Kramis) ins Leben
gerufen, weil ich die Nähe des Instruments zur menschlichen
Stimme schätze. Später kam noch der Kontrabass (gespielt
von Herbert Kramis) dazu, um den Groove zu unterstützen,
und so wurde mein Idealtrio komplett.
Während
des Transkribierens und Arrangierens von Piazzollas Quinettmusik
für diese Triobesetzung, zielte ich darauf, die Essenz
des Tango Nuevo einzufangen, indem ich ihn auf seine unbedingt
notwendigen Komponenten destillierte, indem ich Freiraum für
Improvisationen ließ, und, in einem Fall, eine neue
Einleitung schrieb. Trotzdem, angesichts der Komplexität
und Genialität von Piazzolla’s Kompositionen, bietet
diese CD eine Fülle überschäumende Musik!

Througout my career as a classical pianist I discovered many
beautiful and moving compositions. As I pried into the world
of jazz, I found even more wonderful and exciting music, and
during a year in bali, Indonesia, studying extensively its
traditional gamelan music, I indulged in fascinating rhythmical
and overtone-rich soundscape. But only when I discovered the
compositions of Astor Piazzolla did I find precisely what
I had been searching for: enormous musical and technical challenges,
passion and deepest honesty within a huge range of emotions,
improvisation, contemporary classical complexity and aesthetics,
the simplicity of nostalgic melodies, and grooving Latin American
rhythms.
Resenting
the idea of yet another mere intrepretation of Piazzolla’s
compositions, I decided against bandoneon or violin and instead,
starting out in duo with the saxophone (Otmar Kramis) for
its closeness to the human voice, and later adding the double
bass (Herbert Kramis) to support the grooves, thus completed
my ideal trio.
During
the transcribing and arranging of Piazzolla’s quintet
music for this trio-instrumentation, I aimed at capturing
the essence of the Tango Nuevo by “distilling”
it to its indispensable components, leaving space for improvised
parts and, in one piece, adding a new introduction. Nonetheless,
regarding the complexity and genius of Piazzolla’s work,
our hands are quite full.
