“’New Life’ ist ein anspruchsvoller Titel für eine CD, einer, der zu einer radikalen Erneuerung verführt – eine kompletten Umwandlung. Von diesem Stadtpunkt aus betrachtet, mangelt es sicherlich nicht an neuen Elementen, welche dieses Projekt völlig von meiner ersten CD auf YVP, „Etoile“ unterscheiden. Zunächst einmal ist sind es die Mitspieler: von einer bewusst kammermusikalischen Besetzung mit Piano, Saxophon und Bass bin ich zurückgekehrt zur traditionellen Jazzcombo mit Klavier, Bass und Schlagzeug. Ich habe zu Beginn des Jahrs 2003 begonnen, mit dieser Besetzung zu arbeiten, als ich eine neue Phase des Forschens nach neuen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten begann, und ,New Life’ ist das erste Ergebnis davon. Andere Elemente sind der Einsatz von percussions anstelle eines Schlagzeugs in zwei der Titel, „Max Tango“ und Danza sul posto“ – und auf anderen der Einbezug von Blasinstrumenten. Ich würde sagen, dies sind die materiellen Aspekte dieser Veränderung, zumindest jedoch diejenigen die am ersten ins Auge springen.

Freilich hat ’New Life’ für mich auch eine tiefere Bedeutung: die, das etwas da ist, was es vorher nicht gab, sozusagen eine wirkliche Neugeburt. Es ist, als sei meine innere Reise, etwas das man in Worten nicht ausdrücken kann, wunderbarerweise in der Musik dieser CD ausgedrückt. Weil keine musikalische Sprache als der Jazz besser fähig ist, diese Aspekte, die tief in meinen Kompositionen versteckt sind, einzufangen und aufzudecken, hoffe ich, dass es dieser Jazz ist, der hier aufgenommen ist, der es möglich macht, diese „unsichtbare“ Erfahrung“ dem Hörer zu vermitteln. Und ebenso hoffe ich, dass die Musik, die hier auf ‚New Life’ vorgestellt wird, den Sinn dessen vermittelt, was es für mich möglich gemacht hat, diese Musik zu komponieren und zu spielen.“

“’New Life’ is a demanding title for a CD, one that alludes to a radical renewal – a transformation. From this standpoint, there is surely no lack of new elements to make this project entirely different from ‘Etoile’, my first CD for YVP. First of all, the change in personnel: from a decidedly chamber-styled piano-sax-bass combo I have gone back to the traditional piano-bass-drums Trio I started working with this group in early 2003 as I began a new phase of research that has found its first outlet in ‘New Life’. Other novel elements include the use of percussion in place of drums in two selections – ‘Max Tango’ and ‘Danza sul posto’ – and, in others, the presence of a horn. I would say that these are te material aspects of that change I mentioned, at least those that leap most immediately.
Nevertheless, I would like this title ‘New Life’ to have an even deeper meaning: that of the appearance of something that was not there before, of a real birth in other words. It is as if my inner itinerary, inexpressible in words, had mysteriously wound up in the sounds of this CD.
Since there is no musical language better able than jazz to capture an unveil the aspects hidden deep inside sounds, my hope is that jazz recorded here is capable of communicating this “non-visible” experience to you. And I also hope that the nmmuisic presented here transmits the sense of that ‘New Life’ that has made it possible for me to compose and play what you will be hearing on this CD.”
